COME WITH US ON AN ADVENTURE TO STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

Joanie Rafidi

Come with us on an adventure to Stockholm, Sweden in our new articleabout a self-described “SoCal” girl who has lived and worked in Stockholm most of her adult life.

Joanie Rafidi got to Stockholm via a college internship, but it took a newfound love to convince her to make what she calls “the most beautiful city in the world” her new home.

“I did my internship with the Swedish Employers Confederation, which is the union that represents employers in this country,” she says. “While working there, I met my future husband, Björn, an economist friend who helped me with the statistics required for the project I was working on.”

When the internship was over, lovestruck Joanie returned to Chicago to finish her bachelor’s degree in 1991 and prepare for her return to Stockholm. She had her eyes on a job with Radio Sweden, which was the Swedish version of the Voice of America.

“I had to learn Swedish before I could work as a radio journalist,” she says. “I learned it, although it took a year. Then I got a one-year contract with Radio Sweden to translate everything from Swedish to English. I could not speak Swedish that well yet but I could write it very well and understood it well enough to interview people.”

Her first corporate job was with Electrolux in 1995, the Swedish company known for its high-end appliances. That job was followed by an even bigger job four years later as a marketing communications manager for Ericsson, the Swedish multinational communications company. She left the corporate world about 10 years ago to focus on her own company, Creative Communication.

Joanie recently changed the name of her communications company to Rafidis Graffiti Communications Consultancy, a more modern, digital name.

Although very unhappy her first few years in Sweden, Rafidi has grown to love her adopted country. As a true nature lover, her condo in a Stockholm suburb is the perfect place for her to live.

“I stand up and look out my window and can see the beautiful nature preserve next door,” she says. “It is absolutely gorgeous with water everywhere. Stockholm has got to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is just gorgeous.”
